Leading and Sustaining School Change

As educational leaders, we are committed to change, in the form of school improvement, refusing to accept low-performing schools, and going from “good to great.” In fact, what purpose would we have as leaders if we did not commit ourselves to moving forward and making things better?
During the eight days of NPLI 2007, we will use the lens of human dynamics since school change involves people, not just buildings, policy announcements, and curriculum documents. We will consider why school change is described as non-rational and nonlinear, unpredictable and chaotic, threatening and stressful. We will think about the importance of change attacking our assumptions and disrupting our routines. We will discuss why resistance to change is frequently strong and what we can do to overcome the inevitable obstacles.
Each institute team (elementary, middle or high school) will develop a plan for a school that clearly needs to be changed. Each institute participant will be able to adapt these plans to schools in her/his school district. Staring promptly at 8:00 AM on Saturday July 14, 2007, this year’s institute, through a series of deliberately designed presentations and activities, will help us become better skilled agents of change.

How do we each measure up to the leadership challenges facing American schools?
Unique to the National Principals Leadership Institute is the opportunity for each participant to review the results of a leadership style inventory with a member of the Institute’s National Faculty. Each confidential conversation will help participants create an individualized growth plan by focusing on questions such as: What strengths do I want to build on? What area do I want to work on? How can my leadership impact on the success of our students?
